Ink Wash Portrait of Fei Fei Sun During Fittings 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper.
Two of three of the Fei Fei Drawings I’m working on. This quiet moment is while fittings were taking place. One of the interesting things about documenting the fitting on a runway show is how much focus changes from person to person, sometimes the model is focus sometimes the model focuses on design, or the dynamic between designer, creative director and stylist. The expressions are natural, simple, and reflect a bit about what is going inside the person instead what the person is trying to project. It’s these moments that I’m attracted to.
Portrait of Sasha Kaplan during the Fall 2012 Theonne Shoot 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper
and
Sasha Kaplan waiting to get on set of the Fall 2012 Theonne Shoot 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper.
I shot some candid images of Sasha while shooting the 2012 Fall Campaign for Theonne (http://www.theonne.com/ and http://theonne.tumblr.com/).
Afterwards I made these portraits of her. What I like about Sasha is the contrast between her athletic physique and her baby doll face. She looks so naturally cool and was great fun to work with.
Ink wash Portrait of Stephanie Shui. 9x12 ink on Bristol Paper.
This is from casting shots I took of Stephanie a year ago. Beautiful, funny, and down to earth. I love her eyes and dimples contrasting the strong edge of her chin. She is also very talented abstract artist. Check out her work on her website: http://www.stephanieshiu.com/
Small Portrait of Linnea Regnander in fittings. 9x12 ink on Bristol Paper.
Linnea is another classical beauty. Face that Frederick Lord Leighton would have painted. Strong bone structure with soft features. Every elegant and athletic in her movements. A nice balance between confidence, femininity, and carefree.
Nimue Smit waiting for fittings. 9x12 ink on Bristol Paper.
Her beautiful large doe eyes and naturally rosy cheeks give Nime a porcelain doll appearance but beneath that exterior is strength, beauty, and little boredom between fittings.
Small Portrait of Jana Knauerova from AW11 Casting New York. 9x12 ink on Bristol paper. I'm not sure if Jana still has this hair style but I loved it on her. The short blonde pixie cut with her skin tone blended together in a continuos tone interrupted by dark eyebrows (Brooke Shields intensity brows) and her piercing eyes. She has the most beautiful eyes with dark rims on the outside of the iris.
Small Portrait of Tao Okamoto from Fittings AW2012 New York. 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper.
I stopped cold when I first saw Tao at a casting. She had her Peggy Moffit Vidal Sassoon 'bob' hair cut. Who was this beautiful woman? I finally was able to meet her last year during casting and fittings while she had this pixie cut. Very cool, very beautiful, very professional- wonderful to work with. The shows I have seen online it looks like she is growing out her hair. At the Akris show in Paris it looks like they gave her extensions. She looks amazing in anything. If you haven't seen this Emporio Armani Campaign Video, she takes a star turn.
Small Portrait of Alina Baikova. 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper. I think if William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti would have fallen in love with Alina. She has the features that would have inspired their ideal sense of beauty.
Small Portrait of Ruby Aldridge. 9x12 ink on Bristol Paper.
Ruby has such an interesting face. Her features are very elegant and slightly uneven which gives her the grace of a ballerina but the dreamy look of Pre-Raphaelite painting.
Small Portrait of Hyun Yi Lee. 9x12 Ink Wash on Bristol paper.
I only met Hyun Yi very briefly, but I took some shots of her while she was waiting for casting. The thing that stood out was how effortlessly cool she moved.
The studio is funny space. It's safe, private, and has room to act out fantasies. Emotions run high and low. I often think about the scene in A League of Their Own in which Tom Hanks yells- "There's no CRYING in Baseball!". There is crying in fashion. 9x12 Ink on Bristol Paper.
